Harry Houdini: Mystery, Myth, and Magic
Houdini's private life was as mysterious as his public image.  How could he escape from any restraint?  Why did he fear death when he believed in his own mortality?  Why did he pursue Spiritualists when he believed in Spiritualism?  Why did he have two birth dates while there was no birth record in his home town?  Is the HOUDINI murder theory valid?  We will explore these questions and the HOUDINI CODE and the many myths that surrounded his life and death.

The Pilot with a Magic Hat
Bill Martin commanded an all-volunteer Navy helicopter gunship unit deep in the Mekong Delta in 1967 and 1968 during the fierce battle of the Tet offensive.  Flying over 300 combat missions, he found time to pop into villages over 50 times to entertain the kids with his impromptu magic shows.  On two occasions he narrowly eluded capture by the Communist Vietcong who had a price on his head.  The first escape was assisted by an eight year old girl.  The second was an escape after his hands had been tied behind his back by the VC.  He will demonstrate this escape which he learned from a Houdini book.  Bill will also present some of the magic of the Delta.  The talk will be illustrated with projections of photos taken during the village encounters.  If time permits, this actions-packed story will include details of Bill's unusual participation in the dramatic rescue of 200 orphan girls and eight nuns from the clutches of the Vietcong.  This talk is appropriate as a motivational talk for parents and/or teen-agers.  It can be easily modified for a luncheon or after-dinner talk.

The Great Atlantic Air Race
Few events in history have captured the imagination of the world as did the high-spirited 1919 Atlantic air race (eight years before Lindberg's solo flight).  This talk will detail the preparations by the British crew of Alcock and Brown flying a Vickers Vimy, and the U.S. Navy crew headed by Lieutenant Commander A.C. Read flying the NC-4 flying boat (now on display in the Smithsonian Institute).  Severe weather, mechanical failures and physical challenges could not stop these intrepid aerial pioneers who paved the way for the comfortable, safe and convenient daily crossings that we now enjoy.  Bill Martin will explain why and how he flew blindfolded (as a magician) in the 1969 Great Atlantic Air Race sponsored by the London Daily Mail in commemoration of the first successful Atlantic flight.  Incredibly, he came close to winning the race as well as losing his life in his attempt to expose an international hoax.  History, high-jinx and international good-will are all a part of this story.  Race memorabilia and clippings will be on display.  Photographs and a film clip of the actual 1919 winning flight will be shown.

Come Fly with Me
Bill Martin pays tribute to veterans of all services with this multimedia presentation depicting interesting and unusual episodes in his 23 year career as a Naval Aviator.  Known as The Pilot with a Magic Hat, he captured the hearts of appreciative audiences in ports of call around the world.  Experience bravery and patriotism as well as humor in the face of adversity demonstrated by his crew and compatriots.  Ride Bill's magic carpet from Singapore to Santa Fe, through combat and humanitarian missions.  Find out how all this ended up on the Ed Sullivan show and finally in the Supreme Court of the United States.

The Magic of Strong Self Esteem
We begin with a short magic show.  Then we reveal the secrets and discuss different ways the tricks could be presented.  The class learns three tricks that they will take home.  One trick is made in class with materials provided by the instructor.  Students will practice the three tricks in class. Emphasis will be placed on both technique and presentation skills.  We will discuss the qualities that made Houdini a great entertainer.  Students will be encouraged to discover their own greatness through study and practice.  One of the tricks taught in class requires that the students wear a shirt with a pocket and bring a Kleenex and a large cloth handkerchief or silk and a quarter.  This is a fun learning experience.
